Apparently obvious that Harry Song, otherwise known as Mr. Song left Five Star Music, his first huge signing record even before it came to public. What is not yet clear is if his exit to form his own record, Alterplate is official due to the dances emanating after the pronouncement of his decision. From all indications, he is yet to look into the eyes of the record owners to tell them that their deal with him is over.
The rise and influence of social media makes it so horrible that an artiste could be signed online through the pages of instagram or twitter, and tomorrow, he quits online, too. No orderly process or even some sanity in most deals sealed between record owners and artistes. Harry Song may have left Five Star, but from the power play surrounding it, one can barely see his exit officially.
A time in one of my writings, I reiterated on how Five Star is being managed like a business outfit in Onitsha, Iweka precisely. Just as one can have Okonkwo and sons’ shop, so the people managing the affairs of Five Star are. From their unprofessional manager, who I’m yet to understand if he was picked from a night club as a bouncer to the very level he finds himself, and to the rest of them hanging around.
Let words not be cajoled, there is no future in Five Star with the kind of team I see around them. They may have all the resources available, but ideas and the right connection to get them realized is very far from them. Even when it was obvious and dawn that more hands were to be hired, I understand that their manager who felt threatened of losing his job halted such move.
At a point, we heard when friends of Kcee were not allowed to see him, even when they were on appointments. Why? A manager in his insecurity is threatened by their visits. He was having issue with them, which almost resulted to some face-off. We all got the gist, but we didn’t take it serious because we needed it to come from the inside.
Till Harry Song’s quarrel with them broke out, we would have been left to wonder why the record label that enjoys all the luxury from a billionaire young man, E-Money could not have its place on the Nigeria music chart as number one or two, aside Mavin. By now, Five Star should have been at least one of our country’s best.
Harry Song left the record label long before it came on the news. What kept him there was his respect for E-Money, not even Kcee, because the conspiracy that he was working against them covered his eyes. Kcee could not handle their matters. He forgot that if there is any man he should be very close to hear his heart out, the person would have been Harry Song.
Since he is the man with the hit and talent, his deal with the record label would have been based on team work, and brotherly love, though attached with workable agreements. Harry Song would have remained if Kcee had understood him. One seen as a leader should not join the league of in-house team against team. It backfires. When conspiracy against Harry Song was going on, Kcee would have remained neutral. It would have won him the respect of all.
Being neutral to the matter would have made all to report to him on the challenges faced. But, he treated only the manager’s complaints with huge respect, while relegating Harry’s own as one from an enemy. It played out that it was obvious that what kept Harry there was his respect for E-Money, the man who invested his wealth in his career. Though I have expected that E-Money will invite him over for talks, but I’m yet to see that happening. Maybe, he is busy with his job or he may have no interest.
If Five Star was managed like a record label, the lives of the artistes would have been separated from their career. How? When Kcee and Harry Song were on the trend list, the manager would have suggested for more talented acts to be signed. They may not be brought to limelight, but they could have been good song writers.
Another song writer would have offered three hits on Kcee’s chart, making Harry Song to understand that he is in the business for business purposes. Whereby making him to understand that it is about his career. But here, they were carried away that Harry was the only hit maker in the house.
However, when it was clear to them that new acts should be signed, it happened when there were issues to sort out. Instead of sorting things out, they went out to sign an act. It was a very good decision, but at the wrong time. Harry would have seen it as a welcome development when they had no issue, but doing it when a quarrel was on made him to see such move as an alternative to his person, and then it became a threat.
Now, instead of Kcee to handle or repair the collapsed bridge, he allowed the same manager to attack Harry’s team physically in reprisal. For the first time, we saw artistes involving in a fight violently to end a contract. It is time record owners understand the ethics involved in firm and artistes management. Professionalism should be encouraged.
